At a large Chicago church that is NOT TUCC (Apostolic Church of God), Barack Obama gave a Father's Day speech...
I'm generally at odds with what Obama believes, but when he says something right, I'm not afraid to say so.
I think he showed some courage and character this morning as he spoke about the importance of families, and especially the importance of an active, involved, and most of all PRESENT fathers.
From the sounds of the article (
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/16/us/politics/16obama.html?hp) his thesis wasn't exactly received with rousing applause, but I think he was addressing an issue that NEEDS to be addressed.
Is his proposed solution of a national law in line with my thoughts of what should be done? No... not really... but the importance of the family unit is an issue that I do think needs to carry more weight on the national stage.
While it is important, I hope that any discussion on the matter does not find itself limited by race. Obama is clearly concerned about the state of black fatherhood in this country, and understandably so, but in the coming weeks it sounds like the matter will be discussed in more detail. We'll see what the focus is, and hopefully some good ideas to encourage the maintenance of the family unit will come forth.
So, I may not say this often, but Bravo Obama.
He's no Bill Cosby, but I appreciate the willingness to talk tough on a tough issue.
