General Motors appears to be in a world of hurt.  And it does affect most all of us.

What is happening is no different than what happens at most any other business who have made mistakes, misplaced resources, are suddenly have to react to market situations.  Every business has to do this.  All of them, everyone.

Back in the 1950's, IBM was the place to be.  The company was skyrocketing in the burgeoning information age.  Retiring from IBM was the equivalent of making it to the end of the rainbow.  And many IBM employees found themselves there.

Through not recognizing market forces, visionary peoples of the day (i.e. Gates and Jobs), they essentially lost it, most of it.  Many people retiring from IBM in the 70's and forward found benefit cuts, layoffs, and a company unable to meet those obligations.

Watch GM over the next ten years and you will see IBM redux.  If a corporation doesnt have the resources to meet promised obligations, they cant pay them if they dont have them.  I predict there will be many sad GM employees and retirees over the next several years.
